How The Car Recycling Process Works

For a more detailed look at what actually happens to you car at every step of the car recycling process from car removal to the scrapyard.

1. Vehicle Inspection and Valuation

First stop is usually a ‘wrecker’ or ‘cash for cars’ company that will assesses the car’s overall condition, checking for parts that can be salvaged or sold. Depending on how this inspection goes,  the vehicle owner could get a decent cash amount for their vehicle. Vehicles that still have functioning parts generally yield a higher value, as these components can be refurbished and resold.

2. Removal of Fluids and Hazardous Materials

Before dismantling, all fluids are drained, including oil, brake fluid, coolant, and fuel. These are separated to prevent contamination and ensure that hazardous materials don’t harm the environment. Fluids are disposed of according to local environmental laws. Hazardous materials, such as batteries, are also carefully removed and processed to avoid leaking harmful chemicals.

3. Dismantling and Salvage of Reusable Parts

Components like the engine, transmission, catalytic converter, and tyres are removed and inspected. If these parts are in good condition, they’re cleaned and sometimes repaired if necessary. After dismantling, they are sold as used parts to those looking for affordable replacements.

4. Shredding and Metal Recovery

The remaining car shell, typically a mix of metals, is sent to a shredder at a scrap metal facility (Scrapyard). This machine breaks down the car body into small fragments. Once shredded, materials like steel, aluminium, and copper are separated using magnets and other sorting methods. Recovered metals are then sold to manufacturers to create new products, reducing the need for mining new materials and supporting a circular economy

5. Disposal of Non-Recyclable Materials

Some materials, like specific plastics or rubber, cannot be recyclable and are disposed of in compliance with ACT environmental regulations, thus they are sent to landfill. However, advancements in recycling technology are slowly increasing the number of components that can be reused or repurposed.
